Workshop Description:
Are you at Community College and think a place like Harvard Medical School is far from you? Do you know the steps that it takes to be involved in Research? Are you worried that you will have to sacrifice relationships and family?
Then you must come, meet, and ask questions from Dr. De Guzman who started at Santa Rosa Junior College and is now married, a mother, and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the prestigious Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Rose M. De Guzman is a neuroscientist and is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. She attended Santa RosaJunior College in California, received her BS in Nutritional Biochemistry at University of California, Davis (UC Davis), and earned her PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience at University at Albany, New York.
Her scientific passions include neuroscience, sex differences, maternal-child brain health, infectious diseases, and neurodevelopment. Her PhD dissertation investigated how sexually dimorphic brain regions involved in maternal and stress circuitries change during the postpartum period. Her postdoctoral research studies the impact of maternal immune activation in pregnancy, including maternal obesity and SARS-CoV-2 infection, on fetal brain development. Her long-term goal is to develop personalized therapeutics, guided by patient-level biology.
Outside of the laboratory, mentoring is central to her mission of making science and medicine accessible to students, especially those with similar background of being low SES, first-gen college student/graduate, and an immigrant. As committee chair of the Mass General Postdoc Association and Harvard Med Postdoc Association, she founded “Pathways to Science and Medicine” initiative that provides workshops and a mentoring program to Boston community college students. She believes a diverse scientific community broadens scientific innovation.
