About the Speaker:
Maria Sckaff was born and raised in Recife, Brazil, until she moved to the United States at the age of 15 in the middle of high school. She lived in a small Southeastern Arizona town throughout her high school and community college years. After being awarded the life-changing Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, she transferred to the University of California, San Diego to pursue her bioengineering degree. During her community college and university years, she was involved in translational genomics research, dermatology research, bioengineering clinical projects, and service, mentoring, and tutoring experiences.
After graduation, she transitioned to work in the development of gene editing therapies in academia and in the biotechnology industry in San Francisco, CA for two years. She started medical school at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine this August 2023, and she is currently in her first year of medical school. She has lived in Arizona, California, Georgia, and now Maryland, as a member of a U.S. Army family. She loves trying out new local restaurants and ice cream spots wherever she is, walking her rotty-lab mix dog named Mars, hiking, going to the beach, and watching movies with her friends and family.
