About the Speaker:

Dr. Margarita Elsa Villarino is a physician, epidemiologist, and researcher with more than 30 years of professional experience in clinical trials for new tuberculosis medicines and in the epidemiology, outbreak investigations, prevention, and control of infectious diseases.
Dr. Villarino worked as a medical epidemiologist from 1988 to 2019 at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), institution that she joined as an Epidemic Intelligence Officer for applied learning in epidemiology. For the last 6 years of her CDC career, Elsa was the CDC-Mexico Office Director and the Public Health Attaché for the Department of Health and Human Services, ascribed to the U. S. Embassy in Mexico City.
Elsa served as physician consultant caring for patients with TB and MDR-TB in the Public Health Tuberculosis Clinics of Dekalb County Georgia and Santa Clara County California. Since 2021, she has been a medical epidemiologist at the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) Program, where she is a member of the epidemiology and genomics investigation team for healthcare facility transmission of infectious pathogens and the lead of the HAI Program’s Binational work agenda with the State of Baja California, Mexico. Elsa joined UCSD’s Global Health Program Faculty in the Fall of 2022.
Dr. Villarino is a graduate of the Autonomous University of Baja California Medical School (UABC, MD), the San Diego State University, School of Public Health, Epidemiology and Biostatistics Program (SDSU, MPH), and the Preventive Medicine Residency (PMR) Program of the CDC.
