Workshop Description:
What does it look like to leave behind a world-renowned ballet career to pursue medicine? Join us for a truly inspiring workshop with Miko Fogerty, former international ballet star turned future foot and ankle surgeon. Featured in the award-winning documentary First Position, Miko danced on some of the world’s biggest stages before pivoting to medicine through community college, UC Berkeley, and now podiatric medical school. Her story is one of courage, transformation, and the power of following your purpose—even if it means starting over.
Miko will share her journey from pointe shoes to podiatry, how community college shaped her academic foundation, and what it takes to match at a Harvard-affiliated hospital for residency. This is your chance to hear directly from someone who’s navigated multiple worlds—and succeeded in all of them. Don’t miss this opportunity to ask your questions and get honest, firsthand advice. Skip the myths and misinformation—come hear from someone who truly understands the ups and downs of a nontraditional path to medicine. Be ready to be inspired and empowered on your own journey.

About the Speaker:
Born in London, Miko Fogarty moved to the U.S. with her family when she was 2 yrs old. At the age of 12, she was one of six ballet dancers featured in the award-winning documentary “First Position: A Ballet Documentary: https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B008JAG6RE/ref=atv_dp_share_cu_r.
Her accolades include the Gold Medal at the Moscow International Ballet Competition, Bronze Medal at the Youth America Grand Prix Finals, and being a Prize Winner at the Prix de Lausanne. Miko joined the Birmingham Royal Ballet as the youngest member in 2015 and toured around the United Kingdom.
Although Miko’s ballet career was flourishing, she could not ignore her goal of pursuing a college education and discovering the world outside of ballet. She started at Feather River College and Contra Costa College, where she earned her Chemistry and Biology Associate’s Degrees before transferring to the University of California, Berkeley. Miko graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Integrative Biology in 2020 while also researching brain tumor therapies at the University of California, San Francisco. Currently, Miko is a fourth-year medical student studying to become a foot and ankle surgeon at the California School of Podiatric Medicine. This past March, Miko successfully matched to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital, for residency specializing in Foot and Ankle Surgery.
