About the Speaker:
Joel Maurer, MD is the recently hired Associate Dean for Admissions and Career Advising at the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine (UCR SOM) and is a Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He received his bachelor’s degree in biology at Grinnell College and his medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He completed two residencies: the first in Family Medicine at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, CT and the second in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Prior to arriving at UCR SOM, he spent his previous 18 years at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine (CHM), during which he served as the Lead Clerkship Director for the multi-campus department. He completed a faculty development fellowship (Academic Scholars and Leaders Program) offered by the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics in 2008. He also has numerous years mentoring medical students in women’s health- and LGBT+-related student interest groups.
Throughout his time at CHM, Dr. Maurer was actively involved in medical school admissions, having served on and co-chaired CHM’s Committee on Admissions for a combination of 5 years, followed by his current role as Assistant Dean for Admissions for the last 13 years. He has been a leader on a variety of regional and national Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) committees and is the current Chair-Elect of the AAMC Group on Student Affairs National Steering Committee. He is excited to bring nearly two decades of experience in admissions and student affairs to the UCR SOM.
