Workshop Description:
“Integrative Horizons: Blending Psychiatry, Family Medicine, Wellness, and Behavioral Health in Modern Medicine” is a dynamic and engaging workshop for community college and university PreMed students. This session will provide a unique perspective on the convergence of various medical fields and their impact on holistic patient care.
Led by Dr. Heena Panchal, MD, the Director of Behavioral Health and Chair of Wellness at Kaiser Permanente, San Jose, the workshop will delve into how the integration of psychiatry, family medicine, wellness, and behavioral health is revolutionizing modern medical practices. Dr. Panchal, with her extensive expertise as a double boarded psychiatrist and family medicine physician, will share her experiences in blending these disciplines both in clinical practice and as part of the residency curriculum at Kaiser.
Attendees will explore the significance of empathic, patient-centered communication skills and understand their role in enhancing the physician-patient relationship. Dr. Panchal’s journey, from her medical school training at UC Davis School of Medicine and undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley, through her unique residency training at UPMC Western Psychiatric Institute, will provide invaluable insights for aspiring medical professionals.

About the Speaker:
Heena Panchal, MD is a double-boarded psychiatrist and family medicine physician. She is the chair of wellness for the family medicine residency at Kaiser. She is also the director of behavioral health for family medicine residency at Kaiser, San Jose and leads the integration of behavioral health within the residency curriculum. She precepts and supervises residents with both family medicine and psychiatry cases.
She is also a communication consultant co-lead for Kaiser San Jose and helps train physicians in empathic, patient-centered communications skills to improve the physician and patient relationship.
Dr. Panchal did her residency training in a 5-year double board residency program in Psychiatry and Family Medicine at UPMC Western Psychiatric Institute, did her medical school training at UC Davis School of Medicine and undergraduate training at UC Berkeley.
