Workshop Description:
Mentorship and advising can be powerful tools on your path to becoming a physician—but only if you know how to make the most of them. Join us for an engaging and practical workshop with Elba Muñoz, M.A., Manager of Undergraduate Medical Education at the AltaMed Institute of Health Equity. With years of experience guiding students from diverse backgrounds, Elba will share how to effectively engage with mentors, prepare for advising sessions, and build meaningful professional relationships that support your long-term goals. Learn how to ask the right questions, follow up with intention, and turn short conversations into long-term support.
This is your opportunity to hear directly from someone who works with future healthcare professionals every day—not second-hand opinions or general advice, but real insights from a leader who knows what works. Come ready to ask your questions and get answers that can help you grow into the student—and future doctor—you aspire to be. Whether you are new to the pre-health track or deep into the journey, this session will empower you to connect, learn, and thrive.
About the Speaker:
Elba Muñoz joined AltaMed in March 2023, and serves as the Manager, Undergraduate Medical Education (UME), within the AltaMed Institute of Health Equity (AIHE). Elba, is the daughter of Mexican-Immigrants, born in East Los Angeles and raised in Pomona, CA. Elba comes to AltaMed with over a decade of experience in teaching community college sociology and pre-health professional development at Keck Graduate Institute (KGI), academic and health career advising, guiding aspiring providers to prepare their application writing materials, interview preparation, and providing experiential opportunities to help her students prepare themselves for the rigors of admissions. Elba is a champion for students and she will continue to support many more historically marginalized students pursuing careers in health care including Pre-Health Dreamers. Under Elba’s mentorship her alums have greatly contributed to the scientific and medical community serving as providers, biotech professionals and research contributors to science. Elba’s alums affectionately call her their Premed Tia. When Elba is not mentoring rising professionals, she enjoys spending time with her family, watching movies at home with their dogs, crafting, or gardening.
