Workshop Description:
Medical school admissions can feel like a black box, and too much “advice” is second-hand, outdated, or confidently offered by people who have no clue how admissions decisions are actually made. This workshop is designed for community college and university premed students who want clear, accurate guidance about becoming a competitive applicant to The Long School of Medicine at UT Health Science Center San Antonio. Judianne Kellaway, MD, MEd, FACS, Associate Dean for Admissions and Outreach and Professor of Ophthalmology, will break down what the admissions committee looks for beyond numbers, including academic readiness in context, sustained service, clinical experience, leadership, teamwork, resilience, and mission fit. She will discuss how to build a coherent narrative across your activities, essays, letters, and interviews, and how to avoid common pitfalls that weaken strong candidates. You can come, ask your questions, and get answers directly from the source in a supportive, student-centered format. Whether you are early in your journey or preparing to apply soon, you will leave with clearer priorities, concrete next steps, and renewed confidence grounded in real criteria—not speculation.

About the Speaker:
Judianne Kellaway grew up in and with, the city of Houston, Texas.  After earning a B.S. in Education from the University of Houston, she taught kindergarten for almost ten years in a progressive open classroom in Spring Branch I.S.D., where she hosted numerous student teachers in a model classroom.
After obtaining an M.Ed. Degree, the dream of pursuing a life in medicine began.  Working at Baylor College of Medicine in Neurophysiology as a laboratory technician gave her valuable research experience with patch clamping, the hippocampus, and memory.  During this time, she also supported herself as an independent graphic artist.  She attended the University of Texas Medical School-Houston, now McGovern, for medical school, residency in ophthalmology and a fellowship in the medical and surgical treatment of vitreo-retinal disease.
She served for many years as the Residency Program Director in Ophthalmology and has been actively engaged in the education of medical students, residents and premedical students.  She has developed programs in several areas- teaching components related to ophthalmology, managing electives in ophthalmology, and advising medical students desiring a path to a residency in ophthalmology.  She served as a Master Advisor in McGovern’s student mentoring program, directed a Field Medical Training Course for NASA astronauts for over ten years, and was a preceptor for senior students at the University of Houston College of Optometry.
For over two decades in Houston, she served on a frequent and regular basis as a volunteer ophthalmologist at the San Jose Clinic, providing eye care for the underserved.  She has also spent years serving at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Hospital, a county institution and primary teaching hospital for medical students and residents.   Dr. Kellaway has developed clinical expertise in ocular trauma, diabetic retinopathy, and forensic ophthalmology- non-accidental trauma or “shaken baby syndrome.”
Dr. Kellaway joined the Long School of Medicine, at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio as Associate Dean for Admissions & Outreach, and as Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology, in April of 2016.
Dr. Kellaway brings enthusiasm and expertise to the endeavors of the Office of Admissions & Outreach here at Long School of Medicine.  Her work in admissions and outreach spans decades, since 1994, and she previously served as the assistant dean of admissions at McGovern Medical School.  She has been active in outreach activities across the State, conducting workshops on all aspects of the medical school application process, and has been involved with the State initiatives Joint Admissions Medical Program and Transformations in Medical Education.  At McGovern, Dr. Kellaway was associate faculty in the McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics and facilitated sessions with medical students in the Ethics and Professionalism curriculum, and Professionalism in the Transition to Residency course.
In recent years she was elected to the AAMC Southern Group on Student Affairs. And in conjunction with that service, she serves as the Southern Region representative to the AAMC Committee on Admissions, where she has help on a few major efforts: developing resources for advisors and advisees regarding the application process, helping to develop the key considerations when choosing a virtual or in person admissions process, and several others.
In addition to numerous Dean’s Teaching Awards, other honors include the Leonard Tow Award for Humanism in Medicine, election to the Academy of Master Educators at UTHSC-Houston, election to the AOA Honor Society as a Faculty Member, and named Volunteer of the Year for the John P. McGovern Museum of Health and Medical Science. She has been recognized as a USNWR Top Doc, a Texas Monthly Super Doc, and is now listed in San Antonio magazine’s list of best doctors.
Dr. Kellaway still loves educating and believes it to be one of the most important things she does. At Long School of Medicine, she joins a superb team of experts whose job it is to inform, guide, mentor and inspire people headed for a life in medicine.  Joining this “A Team” is a role that she enthusiastically accepts as one of the best things that has ever happened to her.  “We get to work with young people who have dreams, and help them on the journey to fulfilling those dreams – what could be better?”
