This workshop is designed for community college and university premed students who want a realistic, motivating view of how a physician can lead from the clinic outward, improving care at the bedside while advancing access, quality, and equity at a broader level. Efrain Talamantes, MD, MBA, MSc, FACP, President of Emanate Health Medical Care Foundation, will share lessons from his physician-leader journey, including how to build credibility, earn trust, and translate service into sustained impact. He will discuss the mindsets and experiences that matter for future doctors—clinical exposure, community engagement, mentorship, teamwork, and mission-driven leadership—and how to align your path with your values without losing yourself to comparison or noise. You can come, ask your questions, and get answers in a candid, supportive format, hearing directly from the source instead of second-hand misinformation from people who have no clue about the admission process or what medical leadership actually requires. About the Speaker:
Dr. Efrain Talamantes is an award-winning internal medicine physician and nationally recognized healthcare leader dedicated to advancing health equity, strengthening physician-led care models, and improving access to high-quality, patient-centered care. He serves as President of the Emanate Health Medical Care Foundation (EHMCF), reporting directly to the President and CEO of Emanate Health. EHMCF is a nonprofit that serves as the foundation for delivering integrated, patient- centered outpatient care. In his role, Dr. Talamantes is responsible for leading operational, financial, and clinical infrastructure to support exceptional quality, patient and provider engagement, and alignment across all medical practices within the Emanate Health System. As President, he leads teams focused on creating a more connected, patient-centered system of care, making it easier for individuals and families in the San Gabriel Valley to receive timely, coordinated care that improves health.
Prior to joining Emanate Health, Dr. Talamantes served as Chief Operating OƯicer of Health Services at AltaMed Health Services, the nation’s largest Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). He oversaw clinical operations across a large, multi-site system serving historically underinvested communities and was the inaugural Designated Institutional OƯicer for AltaMed’s Graduate Medical Education Committee. He previously served as Medical Director of the AltaMed Institute for Health Equity, advancing community- partnered research, medical education, and equity-driven system redesign.
Dr. Talamantes has received numerous national recognitions, including being named one of Managed Healthcare Executive’s “10 Emerging Industry Leaders” in 2020, the Robert D. Sparks, MD, Leadership Achievement Award from Physicians for a Healthy California in 2022, and the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research’s 30th Anniversary Community Leader Award in 2024.
He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the David GeƯen School of Medicine at UCLA, an MBA from Emory University’s Goizueta School of Business, and a Master of Science in Health Policy and Management from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. He also completed the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Fellowship at UCLA.
Outside of his professional work, Dr. Talamantes values time with his spouse and their two children and remains deeply committed to service, compassion, and collaboration in advancing the health of the communities he serves.
