Workshop Description:
Are you interested in sports medicine, preventive care, or just curious how someone from a small town can make it all the way to a career in medicine? Join us for an inspiring workshop with Dr. Alvin Au-Yeung, a board-certified family and sports medicine physician with Kaiser Permanente. Born and raised in Lemoore, a small Central Valley town, Dr. Au-Yeung’s path to medicine began in his family’s grocery store and took him through UC Davis, Des Moines University, and Chicago, before returning home to California. With specialties in musculoskeletal health, chronic disease management, nutrition, and diagnostic ultrasound, he blends passion and purpose to provide care that empowers patients and prevents illness.
This is your chance to hear directly from someone who’s been in your shoes—not second-hand advice or myths, but real, practical guidance from a physician who understands the journey from the ground up. Come prepared to ask your questions and get honest answers about medical school, sports medicine, and everything in between. Whether you’re just starting or well on your way, this session will motivate and inform your next steps.
About the Speaker:
Alvin Au-Yeung is a board-certified family medicine and primary care sports medicine physician. He is originally from a small town in the Central Valley (Lemoore), about 40 minutes south of Fresno, where his parents owned a grocery store for 20 years. He attended UC Davis for his undergraduate degree and also completed his Masters of Public Health (MPH) there as well. These experiences fueled his interest in primary care, and specifically, preventive medicine. He moved to the Midwest for his medical degree and post-graduate training. First, he attended Des Moines University in Iowa for his medical degree (DO) and then moved to Chicago for his family medicine residency at Ascension Resurrection. During residency, he gained a greater interest in sports medicine and musculoskeletal pathology. He went on to complete his fellowship in primary care sports medicine at the University of Chicago/Endeavor Health combined program. His clinical interests include preventive medicine, nutrition and weight loss, chronic disease management, diagnostic ultrasound, ultrasound-guided joint injections, maximizing the health of athletes, and treating acute injuries and various chronic MSK injuries. After having spent eight years in the Midwest, he moved back to California in 2024 and is currently doing a mix of primary care and sports medicine at Kaiser Permanente in Roseville. He feels the Kaiser model represents the most ethical and efficient healthcare system in the US, and its emphasis on preventive medicine will help continue to control healthcare costs and provide optimal care.
He is happily married to his wife, Jasmine, whom he met in Chicago during medical school. They have a two-year old doberman pinscher and enjoy traveling, trying new restaurants and wineries/bars, as well as the great outdoors. They try to do one international trip each year.
