Workshop Description:
Winning major transfer scholarships requires more than strong grades; it requires purpose, preparation, strategy, and a clear understanding of how to tell your story with impact. This student-centric and inspirational workshop is designed for community college and university premed students who want to learn how to build a competitive Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Transfer Scholarship application while strengthening their larger transfer and medical school pathway. Julia Florence, M.P.A., B.S., Manager of Scholarship Outreach at The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, will share guidance on scholarship readiness, leadership, service, academic excellence, financial need, transfer planning, and presenting experiences with authenticity and substance. Students will learn how to identify meaningful experiences, organize application materials, request strong recommendations, and connect their goals in medicine to broader community impact. You can come, ask your questions, and get answers in a supportive environment focused on opportunity and confidence. Most importantly, come hear directly from the source rather than second-hand information or from people who have no clue about the admission process.

About the Speaker:
Ms. Florence started at the Foundation as the Communications Summer Assistant in 2018. She spent two years as a Program Coordinator for Scholarship Programs, three years as Communications Associate, and now manages scholarship outreach for all three of the Foundation’s scholarship programs. Before joining the Foundation, she worked in the Office of Outreach and Engagement and The Breeze newspaper at James Madison University.
She holds a B.S. in Public Policy and an M.P.A. in Public Management from James Madison University.

The Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship is a highly selective scholarship for the nation’s top community college students seeking to complete their bachelor’s degrees at four-year colleges or universities.
Each award is intended to cover a significant share of the student’s educational expenses – including tuition, living expenses, books and required fees – for the final two to three years necessary to achieve a bachelor’s degree. Awards vary by individual, based on the cost of tuition as well as other grants or scholarships they may receive. This highly competitive scholarship includes:

  • The opportunity to graduate with as little debt as possible. The award, which is last dollar funding after all institutional aid, can provide as much as $55,000 per year to complete a bachelor’s degree at any accredited undergraduate institution.
  • Ability to pursue any area of study.
  • Multifaceted advising on transitioning to a four-year college and maximizing the student experience
  • Career and graduate school preparation – including the opportunity to apply for internship stipends, conference stipends, and the Cooke Graduate Scholarship.
  • Opportunity to apply for the Internship Stipend program, Conference and Travel Stipend, and Graduate Scholarship.
