Ann Hefner-Gravink, PhD
Professor of Biology
Solano Community College
Saturday, February 28, 2026
10am-11:30am PST
Workshop Description:
If you are tired of working hard in science courses but not seeing the grades reflect your effort, this workshop is for you. Join Ann Hefner-Gravink, PhD, Professor of Biology at Solano Community College, for a practical, pre-med focused session on how to study smarter for STEM classes like biology, chemistry, and organic chemistry. You’ll learn evidence-based strategies to improve retention, build real understanding (not short-term memorization), and perform better on quizzes and exams even when the content feels overwhelming. Dr. Hefner-Gravink will break down how to plan your week, structure study sessions, use active recall, and avoid common traps that waste time and increase stress. This is also your chance to come ask your questions and get clear answers about what successful STEM students actually do, how professors design assessments, and how to adapt your approach when a class gets tougher. Most importantly, you’ll hear directly from the source, not second-hand myths or advice from people who do not understand the academic process. Leave with a repeatable system you can use all quarter or semester long.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Ann Hefner-Gravink earned her B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UC Davis and began her career in genetics, plant biotechnology, and medical diagnostics, specializing in monoclonal antibody production. Her volunteer work teaching science to elementary school students sparked her passion for education and led her to pursue a Ph.D., where she researched protein targeting in yeast while also teaching under the guidance of experienced mentors at both UC Davis and Sacramento State University.
After earning a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology, she taught at UC Davis before joining Solano Community College, where she has taught microbiology, majors biology, the biology of sex, and science study skills for two decades. Dr. HG also advises the SCC Pride Club and is committed to supporting diverse student communities.
