Sarmen Sarkissian, MD
Hematology and Oncology
Oceanview Medical Specialists
Friday November 14, 2025
5pm-6:30pm PST
Workshop Description:
Want to turn curiosity into a publication that strengthens your medical school application? In this practical session, hematologist–oncologist Dr. Sarmen Sarkissian will demystify the path from idea to manuscript for premeds at community colleges, universities, and post-baccs. You’ll learn how to spot a publishable question, map the literature, scope a feasible project, find mentors, and navigate ethics/IRB. We’ll cover study design options for beginners (case reports, chart reviews, quality improvement), data hygiene, basic analysis, and the IMRaD writing workflow—plus journal selection, authorship, avoiding predatory outlets, and strategies for revisions and peer review. Dr. Sarkissian will also connect each step to what admissions committees value, so you can align your work with a compelling application story. This is your chance to come, ask your questions, and get answers. Most importantly, come hear directly from the source—not second-hand opinions, internet myths, or people who have no clue about research or the admission process. Leave with a realistic roadmap, actionable next steps, and the confidence to question, design, deliver, and publish. No prior lab experience required—curiosity and commitment.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Sarmen Sarkissian was born in the San Fernando Valley and raised in Panorama City, experiences that ground his practice in community, humility, and service. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, graduating with honors, and went on to earn his MD from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. He then trained in internal medicine at the Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center, an intense safety-net environment where his interest in hematology and oncology deepened through caring for patients with complex malignancies. Pursuing that calling, he completed fellowship training at the University of California, Irvine, and achieved board certification in internal medicine, hematology, and oncology. Dr. Sarkissian’s scholarly work includes laboratory research in genomic sequencing of prostate cancer and brain tumors, with publications in respected peer-reviewed medical journals. While his investigative interests span multiple tumor types, his current clinical focus is breast cancer, where he emphasizes evidence-based, multidisciplinary care tailored to each patient’s goals and biology. Bilingual in English and Armenian, he is committed to clear, culturally responsive communication and shared decision-making. His guiding philosophy is that every patient and clinical scenario is unique—and that patients themselves teach us the essence of medicine, shaping the empathy, judgment, and precision required for excellent care. Credentials: Board Certified—Internal Medicine, Hematology, Oncology; Residency—Internal Medicine, Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center; Fellowship—Hematology/Oncology, University of California, Irvine; MD—University of California, San Diego; BA (Honors)—University of California, Los Angeles.
