About the Speaker:
Hugo, originally from Michoacán, Mexico—the terminus of the Monarch butterfly migration—relocated to the United States at the age of three. Unlike many children who dream of sports stardom, Hugo aspired to serve his community through healthcare. Raised in a Mexican barrio within the fertile plains of what is now Silicon Valley, his early years were spent laboring in the fields, harvesting apricots, cherries, and pears.
This formative experience profoundly influenced his career trajectory. Following his college education, Hugo achieved his childhood dream by securing a managerial position at the Gardner Health Clinic, a local community health center. It was here that he met his future wife, Gloria Sanchez, a Physician Assistant.
Hugo’s professional journey continued in the field of academic advising, with a focus on enhancing diversity within the medical workforce. He has held significant positions at prestigious institutions, including the UC Davis School of Medicine—where he began under a grant aimed at workforce diversification—the Stanford School of Medicine, UC Santa Cruz Career Center, and the San Jose State College of Health and Human Sciences. He has recently retired from the Career Center of UC Berkeley.
Throughout his over 20-year academic counseling and advising career, Hugo has been privileged to receive mentorship from esteemed figures such as Dr. Bob Montoya, L. Doyle, Dr. Fernando Mendoza, and Ron Garcia. His dedication extends beyond academia into community health, where he has actively contributed for more than 15 years.
Hugo holds a Master’s degree in Academic Counseling from San Jose State University (SJSU). He is married, a father to three children, and a grandfather to three grandchildren. His family is actively engaged in the democratic process, all being staunch Democratic voters. Additionally, he is a member of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions, further underscoring his commitment to both education and community service.
