Workshop Description:
From Community College to Harvard Med, and Chair of Biological Chemistry at UCLA Geffen SOM” presents a riveting and inspirational journey for premed students. Led by Dr. Siavash K. Kurdistani, an illustrious Professor and Chair of the Department of Biological Chemistry at UCLA, this workshop encapsulates the essence of the relentless pursuit of dreams.
Dr. Kurdistani’s path from an Associate’s degree at Santa Monica College to an M.D. at Harvard Medical School, and ultimately to his position at UCLA, is an extraordinary tale filled with determination, hard work, and excellence. His research accomplishments, awarded fellowships, and his association with Nobel Laureates will inspire attendees to explore the myriad possibilities in the field of medicine and beyond.
Join us for this enlightening session as Dr. Kurdistani delves into his groundbreaking research on histones and copper homeostasis while also sharing personal insights on his academic journey and passions outside the lab. Don’t miss this chance to learn, connect, and be inspired by a path less traveled.
About the Speaker:
Siavash K. Kurdistani, MD is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Biological Chemistry with a secondary appointment in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Kurdistani also serves as the Associate Director of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research. Dr. Kurdistani obtained his AS from Santa Monica College, his B.S. degree in Biochemistry from UCLA in 1994 and later pursued his M.D. at Harvard Medical School, graduating in 1999. During his undergraduate studies, he conducted research in the field of Host-Guest Chemistry under the guidance of Dr. Donald J. Cram, the 1987 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. As a medical student, Dr. Kurdistani was awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Medical Student Fellowship, enabling him to conduct research in the laboratory of Dr. Sam W. Lee. Following an internship in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UCLA, he embarked on postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Grunstein, supported by an HHMI fellowship. Dr. Kurdistani’s postdoctoral work earned him the UCLA Chancellor’s Award for Postdoctoral Fellows. He joined the faculty at UCLA in 2004. His laboratory investigates the role of histones in copper homeostasis, a function that may have facilitated the evolution of eukaryotes and could contribute to a range of human disorders. He enjoys playing soccer and is currently rooting for the US Women’s National Team as they compete in the World Cup 2023.
