Workshop Description:
Are you a black man thinking you don’t belong in surgery? Do you think if you start Community College that you won’t belong? Do you think the obstacles are too much? Are you worried about transitioning from Community College to university and Medical School?
Then come and meet Dr. Abolarin whose journey started at California Community College, and continued to UCDavis – and now his journey has led him to the prestigious University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas.
About the Speaker:
Joshua Abolarin, MD is a 1st year General Surgery resident at the University of Texas Southwestern. He took a longer path to medicine after a 6-year career in the United States Navy where he worked as a self-defense weapons technician. While serving in the military, he realized his strong passion for science and working with the community and decided to pursue medicine. He started his educational journey at Diablo Valley College and transferred to the University of California, Davis, and had the opportunity to work in the UC Davis Pre-medical Surgical Internship program where he discovered his passion for surgery. He graduated with a double major in NPB (Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior) and Psychology and then attended the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Now he is enjoying his intern year at UT Southwestern and is developing his skills with the hope of pursuing trauma surgery.
