Workshop Description:
The UCSF Medical Student Panel brings together a group of diverse and accomplished students from different backgrounds who have pursued their medical education through various pathways, including community college. The panel offers a unique opportunity for aspiring medical students to learn about the different paths that lead to medical school and the challenges that come with it. 
The panel comprises individuals from different socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, providing a diverse range of perspectives on the medical school experience. Their stories offer insights into the challenges and rewards of pursuing a medical career, and how to navigate the process successfully. They share their experiences, struggles, and achievements to inspire and guide future medical students.
Former community college students on the panel provide valuable insight into how community college can be an excellent pathway to medical school. They share their journey, offer advice, and address any misconceptions about community college students’ academic preparation for medical school. Overall, the UCSF Medical Student Panel provides a unique opportunity for aspiring medical students to learn from a diverse group of individuals who have successfully navigated the path to medical school.

About the Speakers:

Jennifer Aranda

Jennifer Aranda, MS II
Jennifer Aranda is an incoming second-year medical student at the UCSF School of Medicine. She is joining the Program in Medical Education for the Urban Underserved (PRIME-US) track, for medical students committed to working with urban underserved communities. Her undergraduate background includes being a first-generation college student, and a community college transfer student at Los Angeles Pierce College, where she completed the Honors program, joined EOPS, and was a member of the Center for Community College Partnerships Program at UCLA.
In 2021, she graduated summa cum laude with a major in Psychobiology from UCLA. She has extensive experience mentoring and advising pre-medical and STEM students from disadvantaged backgrounds, especially those from California community colleges. She also has experience as an orthopedic surgery medical scribe, an undergraduate student researcher in two neuroscience labs, and has obtained various clinical hours in underserved medical settings in East Los Angeles and Long Beach, CA. Her hobbies include hiking, reading, crocheting, going to the beach, watching horror movies, playing video games, and trying new foods.

Lourdes Kaufman, MS I
Lourdes Kaufman is a first-year medical student at the UCSF School of Medicine. In 2020, she graduated with honors and magna cum laude with a major in Human Evolutionary Biology and a minor in Chemistry from Harvard College. She has extensive experience mentoring and advising pre-medical and STEM students through the Strive for College program. She also has experience as a healthcare consulting analyst and an undergraduate student researcher in evolutionary biomechanics, microbiology, and synthetic chemistry. Her hobbies include running, hiking, medieval fiction, cooking, baking, and painting. 

Blanca Morales Lugo, MS I
Blanca Morales Lugo (she/her) is a first-year medical student at UCSF School of Medicine. She attended UC Davis where she majored in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and minored in Evolution, Ecology, and Biodiversity. She obtained some of her clinical hours through volunteering with pediatric and adult hospitals, and community clinics for low-income and uninsured populations. Examples of her non-clinical hours include being a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters, helping seniors with Meals on Wheels, tutoring chemistry and biology, and creating community projects!
